Health Benefits of Garlic

Historical use of garlic in medicine goes back centuries. Garlic contains many vitamins, minerals, iron, calcium, potassium, copper, and other nutrients that are essential to the human diet. Research has shown that garlic and its compounds may have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects. Garlic may be neuroactive, meaning it can stimulate neural tissue. Additionally, garlic has other diverse benefits on health such as: Improved blood pressure, lower cholesterol, athletic performance, bone health, nutritional and gut health, anti-inflammation, anticancer, skin health, and heavy metal toxicity. You can supplement with garlic by eating raw or cooked garlic, or by taking commercially available garlic pills, tablets, capsules, or liquids. Garlic supplements may vary in strength, and they can react negatively with medications. It is thus important that you discuss taking garlic with your doctor before starting use.

Getting Up Can Cheer You Up

When people get up and move, even a little, they tend to be happier than when they are still, according to an interesting new study that used cellphone data to track activities and moods. In general, the researchers found, people who move are more content than people who sit.
There already is considerable evidence that phisical activity is linked to psychological health. Epidemiological studies have found, for example, that people who exercise or otherwise are active tupically are less prone to depression and anxiety than sedentary people. The researchers also found that people who moved more frequently tended to report greater life satisfaction over all than those who reported spending most of their time in a chair.
In other words, moving and happiness were closely linked, both in the short term and longer term.Of course, this type os study does not establish causation. It cannot tell us whether being more active actually causes us to become happier or, conversely, whether being happy causes us to move more. It only shows that more activity goes hand-in-hand with greater happiness.

Mistakes Are Normal

8/19/2021

Some of us were never taught that mistakes are normal and should be handled with grace toward ourselves. The reality is that every part of life is a learning curve. It is that way from the moment we enter the world until the day we die. Therefore everyone needs to come up with grace-and truth- filled way of handling our frequent inevitable failures. It's not too late. I don't know about you, but I mainly learn from the mistakes I make and from adjusting to the curveballs life throws at me.

Get Unstuck

Often, We become stuck because we are divided against ourselves on the inside. Let's say we made a huge mistake at work, with a friend, or with our child. We are truly sorry, we have apologized, and we have done whatever we needed to correct the mistake. Yet we still blame ourselves, talk harshly to ourselves, and can't let it go. We are stuck and have an internal fight going on. The antidote to this is truth with compassion toward ourselves. Here's what you might say to yourself:
Yes, I did the wrong thing. I didn't mean to, and I am very sorry. I'm a good and imperfect person. Everyone makes mistakes, and this won't be the last one. I've done what I needed to do to apologize and make this right. My heart and intentions are good even when I make mistakes. I forgive myself, and I will let this go.

Benefits of a Big Breakfast?

Starting the day with a hearty meal may help heart health and more...
It looks like Mom and Dad were right (again): Skipping breakfast may really be a bad idea. In a study published in 2017 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, people who ate small breakfasts or skipped them entirely appeared to be at higher risk for artery-clogging blood vessel plaque than those who had substantial morning meals. Plaque risk was 40 to 50 percent higher for those who ate lightly (mostly coffee and toast or pastries) and even higher in those who ate nothing. Breakfasts considered "substantial" in this research included produce, healthy fats, cereal, and protein. This study can't prove cause and effect, but it mirrors earlier research that found skipping or skimping on breakfast could lead to making unhealthy food choices and consuming more calories later in the day, extra abdominal fat, and higher levels of inflammation and blood sugar, researchers say.

Dealing with Negative Emotions

8/20/2018

Afflictive emotions which destroy our inner peace and their corresponding antidotes:

Anger-Tolerance
Pride/Ego-Humility
Jealousy – Compassion
Hatred – Love
Attachment –Impermanence
Impatience – Patience
Dissatisfaction – Satisfaction
Ignorance – Wisdom

Meditate on these, because if the mind is at peace the body will be more healthy. The mind controls body and speech. If the mind is positive the body and speech will be positive. We have wisdom.
Developing tolerance:
When you feel anger, immediately think about that you are not angry with that person.
Meditate: "Today I will be tolerant, and I will love them as much as I can".
Think about where most of the suffering comes from – the main cause is anger.
If someone makes you angry, think that you have a great opportunity to practice tolerance with them.
Appreciate yourself!
Have confidence in your practice of meditation which reduces distraction and deepens it.
Chant: “benefit from tolerance, harm from anger”. Do this three times per day. Direct the focus on the mind instead of the body. Use mantras to calm the mind.

Awareness Meditation Adapted From Yongey Mingyur Rinponche

When you meditate, think of someone you like and be at peace.
If you make someone you care about unhappy, then you will make yourself unhappy.
The goal of meditation is to help others and this helps you. Begin with someone you like and think that you are meditating for the benefit of all sentient beings. Small actions are fine.
Devotion is the head of the motivation. You need to have devotion to yourself.
You are wonderful you have more capacity and strengths than you think and you have innate goodness. We all are amazing, unique and wonderful!
You all have wisdom within yourselves. As you meditate you will go on a path of discovery. There is unlimited discovery within oneself and you should have faith in yourself.
The essence of meditation is awareness which equals non-distraction.
If you forget awareness, then you are lost; You forget what you are doing and where you are. Do not get lost because when you get lost you become dull minded.
The key point is awareness. Awareness is part of your basic goodness. We have to recognize our awareness and then awareness becomes an integral part our life. We should have continuous awareness, 24 hours per day.
It is not easy to consciously recognize and maintain your awareness. You are however born with awareness. If you recognize your own awareness then it becomes available to you. It is like recognizing that you have a 5 kg diamond in your possession. We all have this 5 kg diamond but we tend to beg for food; this is because we do not recognize that we have this diamond and that we are actually rich.
Recognize who you are and you will become someone different. By recognizing your diamond, your life will be wonderful, you will be as rich as never before. You cannot escape from awareness it is always there. awareness is pristine, like crystal-clear water or light and space. Pristine water can change through reflections and space can change by clouds. Reflections make it look as if the water changes. Just like our concepts and intellectualizations change our awareness.

Hot and Spicy-Health Booster

If you crave the flavor of hot peppers and the like, there might be good news for your blood pressure. People who love very spicy food consumed less salt and had blood pressure readings lower than those who avoided tongue-sizzling tastes. That's according to a recent study in the Journal Hypertension from China's Third Military Medical University. Brain scans of the subjects found something surprising (and useful if you're trying to reduce added salt): Capsaicin, the spicy component of chili peppers, increased activity in brain regions that were also stimulated when salt was consumed. Spicy flavors seem to make the brain more sensitive to salty tastes, potentially taking less salt to satisfy.
